FAQs
What is a Notary Public?
A Notary Public is an official appointed by the Maryland secretary of state to serve the public as an impartial witness in performing a variety of official fraud-deterrent acts related to the signing of important documents. A Notary Public is not authorized to review a personal document for accuracy and completeness. A Notary's duty is to screen the signers of important documents for their true identity, their willingness to sign without duress or intimidation, and their awareness of the contents of the document or transaction.
What types of documents can you notarize?
Powers of Attorney
Affidavits
Certified Copies
Deeds
Wills
Passport Parental Consent
Bill of Sale
Advance Directive
Other legal documents
Maryland notaries are now required to complete a notarial certificate for every act they perform. If your document does not already have a space with notary language included please ask your document preparer what kind of certificate should be attached (i.e. acknowledgement, oath/affirmation, or signature witness).
